Descrizione

La Pallade Athena, la combattiva Minerva dei romani, dea della saggezza nata dalla testa di Zeus, protettrice delle più nobili attività dell’ingegno umano, come le arti, ma anche dell’educazione scolastica e del commercio. Presente anche nella mitologia dell’antica Etruria sin dal VI secolo a.C. con il nome di Menerva, ad essa è dedicato un celebre bronzo etrusco proveniente dalle collezioni granducali medicee, oggi al Museo Archeologico Nazionale di Firenze, ma rinvenuto ad Arezzo nel XVI secolo, insieme all’altrettanto nota Chimera, che certamente Ricci ebbe presente nella realizzazione di questo dipinto. Il Ricci dipinse questa Pallade in occasione dell’apertura al pubblico della storica Biblioteca di Fraternita, nel 1782.

Description

The wall painting represents Pallas Athena, the pugnacious Minerva of ancient Romans, the goddess of wisdom born from Zeus’s head, patron of all human activities, such as arts, education, and trade. The goddess was also worshiped at time of Ancient Etruria (6th Century b.C.) with the name of Menerva. A large Etruscan bronze statue, now in Florence at the National Archaeological Museum and coming from the Medici art collections, was discovered in Arezzo during the 16th Century. Ricci worked on the Pallade in 1782, when the historic Library of the Fraternity was opened to the public.
