Descrizione

Description

This huge painting is not the work of a professional painter. It is more likely to be by a master builder as Giovan Battista Girelli was. We do not know much about him: his firrm appears to be very active for the Fraternita dei Laici of Arezzo. On the 22 October 1696 the Chancellors of the Fraternita draw from Mariotto Cofanis «165 lire (Italian £) , 8 coins, 4 dinars» to pay «Master Gio: Batta Girelli Mason and Company and Manual Labourers» for the works to the Factories, buildings and monuments concerning the institution. It is interesting to follow the itinerary of the water (the long black line): it departs from the bottom right corner, from the «gargoyles» in the Cognaia area along the Castro river, moves forward towards Villa Redi and the Torre di Gnicche area, then canalises on the acqueduct arches, subsequently buries below San Donato and San Pietro hills and eventually comes to the square, springing from the fountain at the bottom left.
