Descrizione

Il dipinto proviene dall’Oratorio dei Santi Lorentino e Pergentino di proprietà della Fraternita dei Laici. Al di sotto della Madonna, da sinistra, compaiono san Donato, con il drago, san Giovanni Battista e altri due santi forse identificabili con Lorentino e Pergentino. Cercando in basso a destra è possibile scorgere il monogramma “AFA”, ovvero “Alessandro Forzori Aretino”. L’artista affiancò Giorgio Vasari in molte delle imprese da lui compiute: a Firenze nel vasto programma decorativo per le nozze di Francesco de’ Medici con Giovanna d’Austria (1565) e nell’ornamento del grande Salone dei Cinquecento in Palazzo Vecchio. Ad Arezzo è suo l’affresco con la Crocifssione e san Donato nel palazzo Comunale.

Description

This painting comes from the Oratorio dei santi Lorentino e Pergentino, which belongs to the Fraternity of the Lay since the late 14th Century. Below Virgin Mary, from the left, are San Donato, with the dragon, san Giovanni Battista and two more saints perhaps identified as Lorentino and Pergentino. In the lower right corner there is the monogram “AFA”, which stands for “Alessandro Forzori Aretino”. This artist worked in Giorgio Vasari’s circle; in Florence he was involved in the vast decorative program for the wedding of Francesco de’ Medici and Giovanna d’Austria (1565), taking part in the painting of the great Salone dei Cinquecento in Palazzo Vecchio. In Arezzo he painted the fresco depicting san Donato’s crucifixion located in the Town Hall.
