IMPERIAL EAGLE

Carved wooden, and gilded; height 66 cm

Descrizione

Description

After having been asked by the Rectors of the Fraternity of Lay the commission for framing the sumptuous portraits of Ferdinand III and of Maria Amalia painted by Pietro Benvenuti in 1691, Donato Mori submitted to the Institution many preparatory drawings for frames with eagles, all dated around the beginning of 19th Century. The eagle motif is a clear reference to the Napoleonic era that re-used the ancient symbol of strength and power of the Roman Empire, also borrowing its meaning.
