Francesco Redi (Arezzo 1626 – Pisa 1698) fu medico e scienziato aretino che trovò il favore presso la corte fiorentina di Ferdinando II de’ Medici e poi di Cosimo III. Fine conoscitore delle arti, fu intimo dei grandi artisti di corte come Justus Suttermans che lo ritrasse per ben tre volte in dipinti oggi non più esistenti. Da uno di questi derivò anche la presente versione, commissionata dallo stesso Redi e da lui inviata ai Rettori della Fraternita.

Description

Francesco Redi (Arezzo 1626 – Pisa 1698) was the mathematician from Arezzo who found favor in the court of both Ferdinando II and Cosimo III de’ Medici. Redi was a doctor specialist in Natural History, a writer and poet, an art connoisseur, and an engraver (having been taught by Remigio Cantagallina). He was intimate with great court artists like Justus Suttermans, who portrayed Redi three times in paintings no longer in existance today. From one of these was the present version derived, commissioned by Redi himself and sent by him to his native city.
