Descrizione

Entrambe le opere provengono originariamente dalla chiesa di S. Lazzaro ad Arezzo, che fu per lungo tempo il ‘lazzaretto’ della città, ovvero il luogo ove venivano ricoverati, spesso per tutta la vita, i malati cronici di malattie infettive gravissime, come la lebbra. L’ospedale di S. Lazzaro, amministrato dalla Fraternita dei Laici sin dal XVI secolo e soppresso nel 1784 quando l’opera venne collocata, insieme al suo pendant, nella nuova chiesa dell’Ospedale di S. Maria del Ponte.

Description

This painting and its pendant (see no. 64) originally came from the church of St Lazarus in Arezzo. for many years this was the city’s lazzaretto ; the hospital caring for those suffering from chronic and highly infectious diseases such as leprosy. the ospedale di S. Lazzaro was managed by the Fraternita dei Laici from the 16th century until it was suppressed in 1784, when the present painting and its pendant were transferred to the newly constructed church of the Ospedale di S. Maria del Ponte.
