L’ISTITUZIONE DELLA FRATERNITA DEI LAICI

Allievo della Scuola Pubblica di Disegno e di Luigi Gatteschi, e sostenuto dalla Fraternita nel corso dei suoi studi a Siena e Firenze, Pio Ricci fu molto attivo per la Fraternita stessa, anche nei numerosi cantieri di restauro che alla fine del XIX secolo cercavano di ripristinare l’antico aspetto medievale del centro storico della città di Arezzo. Inclusa la Pieve di S. Maria, in cui la Fraternita aveva avuto nel XIII secolo la sua prima sede. Questo dipinto è l’emblema della Fraternita dei Laici, con la giovane in atto di far l’elemosina al povero; interessante anche l’ambientazione di fantasia del dipinto dove è riconoscibile solo il campanile della Pieve di S. Maria.

Description

Pio Ricci was a student of Luigi Gatteschi at the Scuola Libera di Disegno e Modellatura. He was supported by the Fraternita dei Laici during his studies in Siena and Florence, and for this reason was very active for the Fraternity itself. He worked on numerous restoration projects that at the end of the 19th century aimed to restore the medieval appearance of Arezzo’s buildings. This included the interior and exterior of the Parish Church of S. Maria, where the Fraternity’s first chapel had stood since the second half of the 13th century. This painting is emblematic of the Fraternita dei Laici: it shows a young woman in the act of distributing alms to the poor. An interesting feature is the imaginary view of the city of Arezzo, where only the bell tower of the Parish Church of S. Maria is recognizable.
