Descrizione

Description

This painting dates from the time of the restructuring of the Fraternity of Lay Palace and its library, re-opened to the public at the edict of Pietro Leopoldo of Lorrain, Great-Duke of Tuscany in 1781. This is one of the most evocative images of the 18th Century town in which the author wished to show in detail the daily activities within the perimeter of the piazza where the Fraternity of the Lay had its main hub. The painting clearly depicts some typical commercial enterprises, such as the market with street vendors scattered around the center of the piazza. It also depicts shows below the Vasari Loggias (owned by the Fraternity of Lay) such as the workshop of a print seller with cards hanging from overhead wires. On the left pillar there are posters which allude to the fervent activity of the Fraternity of the Lay’s Theatre on the rst oor of the same Loggias.
