Descrizione
Il dipinto, ritrae il Papa Pio VI, al secolo Giovannangelo Braschi (1717-1799), che ascese al soglio pontificio dal 1775 al 1799. Egli venne destituito dal governo francese per la sua ferma opposizione al potere straniero e per aver cercato di modernizzare lo stato pontificio. Morì in esilio e il suo corpo fu riportato in Italia nel 1801, epoca alla quale potrebbe risalire anche l’esecuzione del dipinto che sul retro reca la firma del suo autore: «Angelus Ricci pinxit».
Description
This portrait shows pope Pius VI, Giovannangelo Braschi (1717-1799), who ruled from 1775 to 1799. He was deposed by the French revolutionary government on account of his strong opposition to foreign power and his attempts to modernize the Papal state. He died in exile and his body was returned to Italy in 1801, the year in which this painting was more than likely executed. The back of the painting bears the artist’s signature: «Angelus Ricci pinxit».
